Waterfalls in Bir Billing: the Gunehar & Bangoru trail
One of the best things about camping in Gunehar is that a proper mountain waterfall is only a walk away. Here's how to find the falls and make a morning of it.
The Gunehar waterfall
The closest is the Gunehar waterfall, reached on a short, scenic walk from the village through fields and forest. It's an easy outing — perfect for a slow morning before the day heats up — ending at a cool pool where you can dip your feet (or more, if you're brave about the cold).
The Bangoru waterfall
A little further afield is the Bangoru waterfall, a taller, more dramatic fall that takes a bit more walking to reach. The trail follows the stream up through pine and rhododendron; go with decent shoes and a bit of time in hand. It rewards the effort with one of the prettiest spots in the area.
How to reach them
Both are within easy reach of Bir and Gunehar. From our camp it's a five-minute walk down to the river, and the waterfall trails branch off from there. A local can point you the right way, or we'll happily set you off with directions.
Best time to go
- Just after the monsoon (September–October) the falls are at their fullest and the forest is greenest.
- Spring (March–May) is gentler and good for an easy walk.
- Avoid the trails right after heavy rain — rocks get slippery and streams rise fast.
What to carry
- Closed, grippy shoes
- Water and a light snack
- A dry bag or pouch for your phone
- A towel if you plan to get in
Half the joy is the walk in — birdsong, pine, and the sound of water getting louder as you climb. Take it slow.
Make it part of a weekend: a morning at the falls, an afternoon flight, and a bonfire to end the day. Start with our camps.
