Rajgundha Valley: the quiet trek every Bir visitor should do
If you have a spare day in Bir, spend it getting to Rajgundha — a tiny hamlet ringed by mountains, with no real road in and a stillness you'll remember long after you leave.
Where it is
Rajgundha sits in a high valley a little beyond Billing, on the far side from Bir. There's no direct motorable road to the hamlet itself, which is exactly why it has stayed so unspoiled — you finish the journey on foot.
How to get there
There are two popular ways:
- The drive-and-walk. Ride or drive up past Billing toward Bandla / Gunehar, then trek the final stretch into Rajgundha. This is the easiest option for most visitors.
- The full trek. Walk in from Billing through forest and meadow — longer, more rewarding, and best with an early start.
Either way, a scooty or motorbike makes the upper section far easier. We can help you arrange one at camp.
What to expect
Wooden houses, grazing horses, a couple of simple cafés, and mountains on every side. It's the kind of place where you sit with a cup of tea and don't reach for your phone. Many trekkers use Rajgundha as a base for onward routes toward Plachak and the higher meadows.
Best season & tips
- Go in April–June or September–November for clear trails and mild weather.
- Start early; afternoons can cloud over.
- Carry water, snacks and a warm layer — the weather turns quickly at altitude.
- Wear proper shoes; the final stretch is a real trail, not a footpath.
Rajgundha rewards people who slow down. Don't try to rush in and out — give it the morning, and let the valley do its thing.
