Camping in Bir Billing: a complete guide to a night under the Dhauladhars

Riverside tents at a camp in Bir Billing

There are hotels in Bir, and they're fine. But the reason people fall in love with this valley is a night under canvas — fire crackling, river close by, and a sky absolutely full of stars. Here's how to do it well.

Pick the right camp for you

Camps in Bir Billing range from bare-bones to genuinely comfortable. It helps to know what you want:

At Bir Camps we run all of these — from a ₹850 dome to a ₹2,000 luxury tent and our new Open Cottage — so you can match the night to your budget.

What's a night actually like?

Most camps include dinner, a bonfire and breakfast. The evening rhythm is simple: arrive in the afternoon, settle in, watch the light go gold over the ridgelines, then gather at the fire for dinner. Mornings are slow — chai on the deck, mist burning off the valley, paragliders starting to dot the sky.

What to pack

The best season to camp

March to June brings warm days and clear skies. September to November is arguably even better — the air is washed clean after the monsoon and the valley is at its greenest. Winter camping is possible but cold; the monsoon months are best avoided.

Make a weekend of it

Camping pairs naturally with everything else the valley offers — a paragliding flight at dawn, a walk to the waterfalls, or a ride out to the Rajgundha valley. Two days and one night is the sweet spot.

Don't over-plan it. The best part of camping in Bir is the time you spend doing nothing at all, with a very good view.
